It's not everyday you get a request from a client for a purple and pink kitchen, but our client was quite the visionary with this request!
Being a creative herself, our client was one of those decisive, "I know what I want" personalities.
It wasn't her first kitchen renovation rodeo. She had designed and managed her own bold kitchen renovation before and loved it! She even got some press on it, so moving into this new home, she knew she wanted to go bolder this time, but with a whole house to renovate, she decided to hand off the kitchen design to our team while she handled the rest.
If you have followed me for a while, you know I have no fear of color, but I often use color in a way that is more flexible - meaning that I tend to limit the use of unconventional color on more permanent surfaces like kitchen cabinetry for example, so it can be changed up a bit easier later if the client ever changed their mind.
I was pleasantly surprised by my client's inspiration photos for the color direction she wanted to go, so there was no guessing about how bold she wanted it. As the kids would say today - she was 10 toes down on pink and purple.
Most of the board feels a bit moody and dark, but her home called for a good blend of dark and light to create a more timeless and sophisticated palette.
The kitchen was pretty open to the rest of the living space on the lower level of her home, so that had to be factored into the design direction we would go.
Here's where we started with her kitchen. I just realized that I don't have very many shots of the kitchen before renovation, but this should give you an idea.
It wasn't a terrible kitchen, but it somehow felt small and closed-in even though it was mostly a white kitchen. We did not add any space with the renovation except extending the island, but the new kitchen feels so much larger and open.
Here's another shot of the before showing the breakfast area.
I called on one of my favorite design collaborators, Stephanie Raynard to create the renderings and document the layouts for my client's GC to execute the design.
You can see here in the rendering that the color palette and materials were still a work in progress, but we decided to keep the layout of the current kitchen with a few exceptions.
We extended the island on both sides.
We centered the sink on the fridge wall instead of having it angled.
We organized the cabinetry a bit better and added more functional features and more storage.
We eliminated the stacked microwave and oven and included a range with a beautiful hood and microwave in the island.
We created a better layout for the bar area with extra space for wine bottles.
We added a built-in window seat in the breakfast area with added storage.
Our initial countertop choices were not available, and the new Brecchia marble was also a determining factor in the cabinetry colors we decided on.
The original marble backsplash was also a custom layout, however, a few of the materials that make up the mosaic were on eternal backorder, and we moved in a different direction for the new backsplash.
Here's our original presentation board
Here is the revised board once we decided on the materials and colors.
As mentioned the waterfall island countertop is Brecchia marble. Just look how stunning it is!
The paint colors we decided on for the cabinetry is Sherwin Williams Sashay Sand for the perimeter and Blackberry with a hint of black added in for the island and bar areas.
These colors work because we went with a "neutral" version of the colors. The pink has a more dusty look and the purple was made a bit more toned down. We did not want the colors to look bright and jarring, and we certainly wanted to make sure everything played the supporting role without any one element standing out too much.
The gold accents help to warm up the space and add that little touch of elegance.
Black is always a great addition when you are working with unconventional colors like this. They help to ground the space.
This fridge view is my favorite!
My client actually sourced the appliance hardware and got my blessings on them. Look how great they work with the cabinet hardware I selected!
One of the many great comments I received on this kitchen after sharing it on social media is this one from a design colleague....... "I love this so much!! It's giving Mamie Eisenhower "First Lady Pink in the New Millenia" vibes in the most FABULOUS way. Retro, modern, and fresh! YAY"
This comment says it all. We wanted something fitting for the home but timeless and the Mamie Eisenhower is icing on the cake.
Looking at the backsplash, I am so happy my client and I took the time to lay out each tile on the floor before they were installed. This layout could have easily gone bad if it wasn't carefully planned out.
This is an important thing to keep in mind when you work with patterned mosaics where each piece is a bit different.
My client did an amazing job managing the project from our design and procuring all the pieces to bring this space to life. I am so proud of what we have created together.
I am hoping to return soon for professional photos, which will include the other areas we designed for her. For now, we will enjoy the photos taken by Courtney Morris our Operations Manager.
