I am super excited to be participating in another edition of The One Room Challenge for the third time!
If you have been following The Naked Decorator for a while, you will probably remember that I completed two One Room Challenges last year. Click here and here to see the big reveals
In case you are wondering what the One Room Challenge is, allow me to fill you in. It is a decorating challenge hosted by Linda at Calling It Home Blog, where a group of 20 Design and lifestyle Bloggers are invited to makeover a room in their home, or a client’s home, and blog about the progress over 6 weeks with the big reveal on week # 6! Anyone can participate in the linking party that happens every Thursday. Each time I have joined as a linking participant. Last Fall we had over 90 bloggers participate!

It is a lot of planning and work to pull off a design project from start to finish in 6 weeks, but soooo much fun!
This time around, I will be re-doing my son Joshua’s bedroom. He just turned 13 in November so he is officially a teenager, and it is time to step up his game!
I hate to admit it, but Josh is living like a squatter now in his tiny bedroom measuring 10 ‘x10’ 9″. He has just a full size mattress and box spring sitting on the floor and an office armoire that is absolutely useless for storage. In fact, there is no storage to speak of in his room, so all his clothes are spilling out of his tiny closet and armoire onto the floor. It is truly a mess in there, so Josh’s room has to be the priority now!

Meet Josh
Josh is a very social fellow who enjoys being involved with the youth ministry at church. He has done several charity projects with his youth group and he looks forward to attending church every Sunday. He loves to draw and paint, and he is really very good. He loves to sing as well and he has been learning to play the guitar at church. Josh’s first love is playing video games and making vine videos. Lol. He was actually editor of his own blog series called Gamer To The World, but I think he may need to get back on track with that 🙂 He wants to be a policeman when he grows up, but I still think he should explore cinematography because he has that kind of personality.
I plan to use some of Josh’s art in his room and display them in unique ways

And believe me, we cleaned up a bit for the photos 🙂
The Floor Plan
THE FLOOR PLAN
The Inspiration
I was basically forced to buy this map of the US about a year ago while I was doing some shopping for a client from one of my art vendors. The order I was placing for my client did not meet their minimum order requirement, so I had to add another item to make up the difference. Without even thinking about it I grabbed this map, not being sure where I was going to use it. Now it is the perfect piece for Josh’s room and I am so glad I bought it. The colors in the room will come from this piece.
The Plan
The plan is to definitely address storage in there by investing in a custom built-in unit around the custom upholstered headboard, which will have nailheads. The built-in unit will have a small attached nightstand with open shelving above, as well as over the headboard. If the custom built-ins end up being too costly to do, I will be visiting Ikea to get some off-the-shelf units

The built-ins will be painted out in white, but the wall itself will be in a deep gray from Glidden called Krimson Lake. That color will be visible at the back of the bookcases and will add a nice accent to the main wall. the rest of the room will be painted in Sanctuary, also from Glidden
The custom built-ins will continue in the closet with open shelves for his shoes and drawers for socks and underwear
The bed itself is a platform bed with storage drawers underneath. I already purchased it a few months ago and have yet to assemble it

I now wish that I had gotten it in white, but I may paint it out in the same gray color as the accent wall
The upholstered headboard will be made from some fabric I had left over from another project. It perfectly matches the orange tones in the art above. Here is an example of what it will look like. Just imagine it with a solid textured orange linen fabric

Josh has one small window in his room, so I will be adding a non-functional roman shade in an Ikat patterned fabric
The Ikat fabric for the drapery and the textured linen is for the headboard
The desk is a small campaign style desk from West Elm. It will sit underneath the window with an existing rush seat, ladder back chair that we already own
The flooring in his room is a builder grade carpet that is already filthy and worn after being in the home for only 2 years. It will get ripped out and replaced with plywood flooring cut into strips and installed as hardwood. I did a DIY project in the same way a few months back. (See the post here on how to do this). I will then enlist the help of my faux painter to achieve a look similar to this one I saw on Instagram. Sorry for the blurriness
We will tone down our version just a bit using more of the colors in our room, but I love the rough and rugged yet artsy look!
I will add a rug to soften the look of the floor. I am trying to decide between a blue or an orange rug! I am leaning towards the orange since the blue will be a bit more dominant in the room
My daughter has a dresser now in her room that she isn’t using, so that will move to Josh’s room. It is stained in a dark ebony finish, but I plan to add some off-white vertical stripes to give it a unique look. Here’s an example of what we are going for (something along these lines)

This should be an easy DIY project.
I would love to add a Sputnik chandelier, but in Houston Texas fans are a must have during the summer. I may still remove the existing ceiling fan and add a desk fan just so I can add the Sputnik
I will also be adding a couple sconces above the headboard and at the desk area for maximum lighting.
The bedding and the rest of the room’s accessories will probably come from Ikea. I will plan a day with Josh to go shopping for the final touches for his room
The Budget
I am hoping that I can pull off all the items listed above for under $3000. The built-ins will definitely be a big ticket item and so will the floors. I will have to do some serious penny pinching and a lot of elbow grease to pull this one off.
So what do you think about this ambitious plan? Think I can do it?
Please subscribe and follow along each Thursday as I reveal the progress of the room. Feel free to check out the main participants for this edition
Wishing You Beauty and Inspiration!
